Kitting and co-packing are assembly operations that combine multiple components or products into a single saleable or shippable unit — a kit (a test kit, a subscription box, a multi-component product) or a co-packed multipack — and apply the final packaging and labeling. Often done by a third party near the end of the chain, it’s where separate items, instructions, and packaging become one lot-controlled finished unit.
It looks like simple assembly, but it’s the moment several supply chains converge into one SKU — and the moment a missing piece or a broken lot link becomes the finished product’s problem.
The levers are BOM accuracy, component identification and lot linkage, assembly verification, and final labeling. The lot linkage is the quiet one: the kit lot has to point back to each component’s lot, or a recall can’t reach the affected pieces.
The BOM and instructions are defined, components received/identified/staged with their own lots, assembled per BOM with inserts added, the final pack sealed/labeled/lot-coded so the kit lot links its component lots, then assembly accuracy verified and case-packed.

Completeness and traceability are the whole game.
A kit is only as good as its completeness and traceability. A missing component, a wrong insert, mismatched or expired component lots, or a kit lot that doesn’t link back to each component’s lot turns into a non-functional product and a broken recall chain — the kit fails the customer and the recall at once.
Because co-packing often sits at a third party and carries the brand’s regulated labeling, ownership of claim compliance and the component-to-kit lot linkage are the controls that matter. The discipline is verified kit completeness and assembly accuracy, each component’s lot linked to the kit lot, component dating that supports the kit’s shelf life, clear ownership and sign-off of labeling and claim compliance, component identification and staging that prevents mix-ups, and version-controlled BOM and assembly instructions.
